Workshop in Durango, Colorado September 29-October 1, 2017

I will teach a workshop on landscape photography in Southwestern Colorado timed to the turning of the aspens in the San Juan Mountains. The three-day session will be hosted by the Sorrel Sky Gallery in Durango.

This workshop is for all photographers who want to create more evocative images in the natural world—from serious beginners to advanced amateurs.

In the orientation, I will show prints of my large-format landscape work and talk about the circumstances that produced the images. I’ll discuss the process I have evolved for being in the right place at the right time, finding structure in a chaotic visual environment, and capturing nuances of light and color. During both field and classroom sessions I will point out some of the obstacles that often keep beautiful sights from translating into satisfying photographs, and techniques for overcoming them. There will be an emphasis on composition, and the use of low light for rich color and contrast control. A portion of one midday session will be devoted to supportive reviews of participants’ images.

The cost of the 3 day workshop is $450. To sign up, contact the gallery at 970-247-3555 or Lise@sorrelsy.com

Over a week, I traversed the stretch between the town of Boulder on the west and the Colorado border on the east. It is an area of wide open roads and just a few small towns, widely scattered and relatively isolated. I spent the last night in Mexican Hat where people routinely drive one hundred miles to Cortez, Colorado to get to a supermarket and other services that most of us think of as daily essentials.
